Abstract Submission
[Sample Abstract] [Templates] [Formatting] [File Naming] [Submission]

The abstract submission deadline has passed. We will still accept abstracts but they are not guaranteed to be published in the conference abstract book. Late abstracts will be compiled into an addendum and distributed to the conference registrants. If you experience some difficulty connecting to our ftp server, contact help@msi.umn.edu for server errors or Prof. Doug Ohlendorf for other problems.

Abstracts will only be accepted electronically using word processors WordPerfect or Microsoft Word on an IBM-compatible PC or a Macintosh computer. Acceptable word processor versions are WordPerfect 3.0 or higher (Macintosh), WordPerfect 6.0 or higher (PC), and Microsoft Word versions 5.1 or higher.

The inclusion of a black and white figure in the submitted abstract is encouraged subject to the constraints of overall size and word processor. References and acknowledgements may also be included.

Template abstracts can be retrieved from the links below and contain the file formatting instructions. After editing the template to produce the finished abstract, rename the file to conform with the file naming conventions. Once an abstract has been submitted, it cannot be changed! Abstract submission may be accomplished using Netscape 4.0 (or higher) or FTP.

Formatting the abstract

It is best to type directly into the template, typing over the included text in the appropriate areas. If you choose to cut and paste from another document, using the 'Paste Special' command and selecting 'Paste as unformatted text' will preserve the formatting of the template. If you choose not to use the template, follow the formatting instructions below. Use of an illustrative black and white figure with a white background is encouraged (e.g. ChemDraw; Chem3D; picture files: tiff, gif, jpeg, windows metafiles, bmp).

The size (7"= 17.8 cm in width, 4.5"= 11.5 cm in height), paper size and layout (8.5" x 11", portrait) and formatting have been preset in the templates to conform with the publishers requirements. Any deviation from these settings will lead to rejection of the abstract.

Use Times New Roman or Times fonts. Greek characters should be written using Symbol font (not the special character set in Word Perfect). The Wingding font can be used for typographical symbols.

On the first line give the title (centered, 13 pt) with only the first word capitalized. Since the title will be used for electronic searching, it should contain as many keywords as appropriate. Follow the title with a blank line (13 pt).

On the next line provide the list of authors (First name M.I. Surname, centered, 10 pt) separated by commas. Underline the presenting author. On the next line provide the affiliations (centered, italics, 8 pt). On the next line provide the e-mail address of the presenting author (centered, 8 pt). Include one 8 pt blank lines following the e-mail address.

The body of the abstract follows (full justification, paragraph indent= 0.15"= 0.3 cm, 9 pt, line spacing set to exactly 11 pt in Word and single space in WordPerfect). There should be no blank lines between paragraphs.

Note for Microsoft Word Users: Figures should be inserted with word wrapping (Word98-Mac, Word97-PC) or frame(Word5.1-Mac, Word6.0 or Word97-PC). Do not use return carriages to insert figures. The word wrapping/frame format assures that the text will remain left and right justified.

Please proofread and check your abstract prior to submission! Be sure that there are no spelling mistakes and that any illustrative figures are embedded in the document and will upload with the text on submission.

Naming your abstract file

Upon registration the presenting author should have been assigned a 7-digit registration number, which serves as the basis for the file name of the abstract. To name your abstract file:

1. Begin with:

a. "p" if written on a PC, or

b. "m" if written on a Macintosh

2. Followed by the 7-digit registration number

3. End with:

a. ".wpd" if written using Word Perfect, or

b. ".doc" if written using Microsoft Word

For example, an acceptable file name would be: m1234567.wpd or p7654321.doc
